Boyd's is also a proven leader in the development of innovative equipment for today's demanding oilfield industry. U.S. Patents include the Boyd's Wireline Side Entry Sub (Patent No. 4,681,162) and Boyd's Safety Riser (Patent No. 5,664,627).

The Side Entry Sub allows wireline tools to be run safely into the drill stem on drilling rigs equipped with top drive units while affording a "straight pull" on the drill stem when it is necessary to torque or stretch the pipe.

The Boyd's Side Entry Sub (SES) has proven itself in the field. The SES has been used for several years while wireline work was being performed on drilling rigs equipped with a Top Drive unit. It has proven itself as a valuable safety tool allowing the wireline to safely enter the pipe string without the use of bicycle sheaves. These sheaves can cause damage to wireline, including the high possibility of the wireline being cut which can cause injury to personnel on the rig floor when wireline falls.

The Safety Riser is an aluminum sleeved riser designed to contain the spent chemical and dissipate the high pressures generated by a premature detonation of a chemical cutter at the surface. In addition, Boyd's carries the full line of Varel rock bits, M & M casing scrapers, drill collars and junk mills.

The Boyd's Safety Riser has had been tested and documented as a valuable safety device when the need arises to make a chemical cut in tubing when there is a pressure of less than 2500psi on the tubing. It has an aluminum sleeve which the chemical emitted will not cut, thus preserving the integrity of the 5 1/2" riser. There is a dump valve to keep the pressure from exceeding the burst pressure of the 5 1/2" riser.
